Study Visit to St.Christopher’s Hospice

Accompanied by Tiltas Trustee, Mida Babiliene, two Lithuanian palliative care professionals attended a Study Day at the internationally-renowned St Christopher’s Hospice on Friday 23 November under the auspices of The Tiltas Trust. The Director of Vita Digna,  Irena Danieliene, was accompanied by Dr. Dalia Skuropskiene, Head of Palliative Care at the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics –Oncology Hospital. The day was arranged to introduce the ladies to St. Christopher’s philosophy of care and it focused on end of life care within a patient’s home. This is an innovative concept in Lithuania. Irena Danieliene is keen to introduce aspects of St. Christopher’s best practice to Vita Digna. Dr. Skuropskiene and Irena work closely together when delivering a choice of care to patients being discharged from hospital. St Christopher’s Hospice is very supportive of the progress being made in modern palliative care in Lithuania. They had already hosted an informal visit by the Franciscan monks from Kretinga who are soon to open the first cancer support centre. More recently in Autumn 2011, St Christopher’s gave bursaries to two senior nurses from Lithuania who attended a multi professional fortnight.
